Beer #143 - Orval

After a days sight-seeing in Brussels we checked out one of the bars we'd been recommended in the centre of the city, Au Bon Vieux Temps. This place is really worth popping into, nestled down a side alley it oozes old world charm with wood-panelled walls, a fireplace and a pretty impressive stained glass window. The beer selection is pretty limited by Belgian standards and from memory they only served trappist beer. Prices were reasonably, especially by London standards, and I went for an Orval. Unlike most trappist breweries this is the only beer that the Orval brewery makes available for public consumption. This is a really great beer and one of my favourite Belgians so far. At 6.2% its strong by British standards but in the trappist world relatively low in alcohol. It's still full of flavour, it's dark yet light on the malt yet fruity. It has a real hop character which renders it quite dry. Writing about it is making me want one now!

Brewery: Brasserie dOrval
Country: Belgium
ABV: 6.2%
