This beer, under the guise ‘Elland 1872 Porter’, was awarded
Champion Beer of Britain of 2013 by CAMRA. As a result of its ensuing
popularity and due to the small size of Elland Brewery this ‘Celebration’
version was brewed en masse at Thwaites to meet the demand. The brewery was
founded in 2002 but this is brewed with an original recipe that dates from
1872, hence the name of the original beer. I tried this at the Fox on the Hill
in Denmark Hill, South London on New Year’s Eve as I was making my way to a friend’s
house. A lot of Wetherspoons pubs in
London don’t always come with the cheap prices that you’d expect from the
chain, however the Fox on the Hill is ridiculously cheap. I was a bit pushed
for time and already running late so I settled for a half pint which set me
back just £1.15, the mathematical geniuses amongst you will work out that that
equates to £2.30 a pint. In London. For one of the best beers in the country.
Bargain. Anyway, the beer. This is a really great porter fully deserving of the
recognition that it has received from CAMRA. It’s full-flavoured and there is a
lot going on with chocolate, caramel and coffee all present. Really great.
