Beer #214 - Butcombe Matthew Pale Ale

Yet another guest ale at The Compton Arms, this time from Somerset’s Butcombe Brewery. Butcombe describes itself as a traditional English brewery. It was founded in 1978 in a very small rural village of the same name however at the turn of the century the brewery was sold and subsequently moved to a purpose-built site on an industrial estate. Butcombe’s beers are pretty widely available now and its signature Butcombe Bitter is fairly ubiquitous. Furthermore the brewery was named SIBA’s 2014 Brewery of the Year, which is quite an accolade. Matthew’s Pale Ale is a seasonal brew, available during the first three months of the year which is quite surprising given its clean, crisp and refreshing taste; I’d have thought it more suited to the summer market. It pours a darkish golden colour and the aroma is floral and fruity. The taste is lovely and fresh, slightly hoppy but not overpowering with some nice lemon notes. A pretty decent cask beer, would drink again.
