I went to watch the horse-racing at Lingield Park racecourse in Surrey on Saturday. At the bar they offer a guest real ale, with a couple of casks stashed behind the bar. This was a pleasant surprise as I was only really anticipating the usual rubbish lagers to be available. Anyway Saturday’s ale was Finchcocks Original from Westerham Brewery Co. in Kent. Reading up on the brewery on their website has proved quite interesting, founded in 2004, the brewery focuses on the local market to “support the initiative to reduce food miles in the supply chain” which has the added bonus of ensuring their beer arrives fresh and in decent condition. Whilst this is laudable in itself the brewery has a list of ethical and environmental initiatives which has endeared them to me no end. It’s refreshing to come across a company, any company, that really seems to care about the way they operate and the consequences. The Finchcocks Original went down very well, a light golden beer that checks in at just 3.5% but is still flavoursome. This is another brewery that I’ll be keeping a keen eye out for in future.
