Beer #45 - Baltika 3 Klassicheskoe (Classic)
Beer #46 - Baltika 7 Eksportnoe (Export)
Beer #47 - Ayan Abakanskoe

Another post from the archives. Since I’d heard about the Trans-Siberian railway as a young teenager I’d made travelling across Russia by rail my primary lifetime goal. In late 2011 I found myself travelling through the Siberian wilderness en-route to Beijing. The journey was absolutely incredible and thankfully lived up to my expectations in every way. At various stops along the route you have time to stock up on any provisions you need and I picked up these four beers from one of the ladies that appear on the platforms armed with food and drink. As it was so long ago I can’t really pass comment on the merits of these three beers.

Baltika Brewery is a Russian behemoth with a big market share in its own country. Based in St Petersburg the brewery (with the backing of Carlsberg) has expanded of late and indeed on my return to England following my trip I was amazed to see Baltika 7 available in Wetherspoons. They produce a wide variety of beers with numbered Baltika varieties running from 0 (non-alcoholic) to 12.

The other beer, Ayan Abakansko, is genuinely Siberian, brewed by OAO Ayan in the Republic of Khakasiya. Details on the beer (in English) are pretty hard to come by so I can add little more of interest. If anyone has any information on the brewer I’d be pleased to hear it.
