Beer #235 - Florence A Head in a Hat Tommy IPA

On Saturday I enjoyed a superb lunch at the Salon at Cannon & Cannon in Brixton market. The beer offerings included a couple of offerings from Brixton Brewery and a couple from the Head in a Hat Brewery based at the Florence pub in South London. The Florence is located in Herne Hill and the brewery produces beer under two brands, Head in a Hat and some that go under the Florence name. I seem to say this in every other post but this is yet another brewery I hadn’t even heard of prior to Saturday; the London beer scene is just incredible. Tommy IPA is quite an unusual beast; it’s very well hopped with English hops and therefore packed with flavour, yet is just 4.2% ABV. It pours pale gold and the taste is unmistakeably English but having been packed with hops it’s got far more bite than you might imagine. It’s earthy and biscuity and rather bitter too, but lacking in the citrus flavours that are in vogue at the moment. I couldn’t help feeling that this beer is an odd mish-mash of styles that just doesn’t quite work.
