I just had time for a second beer at the Urban Tap House so thought I'd push myself and ordered a third of Magic Rock's Magic 8 Ball. I love what Magic Rock do but my exposure to black IPAs has been somewhat limited. This one pours a very dark brown with a cream head. The aroma is dominated by roasted malts - caramel, dark chocolate and coffee. Flavour-wise it's more of the same with roasted malt flavours balanced by grassy bitter hops, the initial sweetness cancelled out by a light bitter finish. It's quite thin in body and easy drinking. I'm still not really sure how I feel about the style overall but this is a decent beer.
Brewey: Magic Rock Brewing
