Beer #33 - Mongozo Mango

On Thursday I joined some colleagues for drinks at The Dovetail, a Belgian beer bar in Clerkenwell, in honour of someone’s last week. A round of fruit beers was being ordered and I decided to join in, having always been fascinated by the brightly coloured bottles of Mongozo that I’ve spotted in pub fridges in the past. I opted for mango flavour, the latest addition to the line that also includes coconut and banana amongst others. The beer itself was sickly sweet with a very strong mango flavour and a hint of beeriness. Whilst I’m happy to have dealt with my curiosity I won’t be buying one of these again; if I want something sweet I’ll get a juice and if I want a beer I’ll have a beer, as far as I’m concerned this just offers the worst of both worlds! I also had a sip of the coconut flavour which I did prefer, but I still don’t really ‘get’ it. The Mongozo story itself is quite interesting; the idea apparently came from a chap named Henrique Kabia, a refugee who arrived in the Netherlands from Africa with nothing but his distant great-grandmothers recipe for palm beer and the knowledge of how to brew it and went on commercialise it with a variety of fruit flavourings.
