Beer #282 - Buxton Jacob’s Ladder

This is a hoppy session beer from the excellent Buxton Brewery of Derbyshire. The brewery, which is one of the main players of the ‘craft’ scene in the UK, is donating some of the proceeds from this beer to the local Mountain Rescue Team which is a nice gesture. I really like beers like these, that pack a decent flavoursome punch whilst being low in alcohol content (Jacob’s Ladder checks in at 2.8% ABV). This one pours a hazy, almost cloudy golden-yellow colour. The aroma gives a hint of what is to come – it’s full of fresh hops with grassy and citrus notes. The flavour is more of the same, very fresh and punchy with a bitter citrus tang. It’s very refreshing yet full-bodied and full of flavour.

Beer #73 - Buxton American Rye

Another one from my trip to Craft Beer Co. in Islington. After a couple of citrus heavy halves this was a beautiful and delicious change. Buxton's American Rye is a lovely amber ale, the malts are at the fore in this one and it has a hint of caramel. This was very drinkable and I'd have happily sunk a few more of these had I not already been 6 or so pints in.

Beer #72 - Buxton Special Pale Ale (SPA)

Another one from the Craft Beer Co. in Islington. Following on from the Quiet Riot featured in my last post I ordered a half of Buxton SPA, unaware that I was about to be delivered another rather bitter, grapefruity, smack in the chops. This was my first encounter with Buxton Brewery who, according to my highly detailed research, are regarded as one of Britain’s top craft breweries. You learn something new every day. Anyway whilst this was fairly light, in addition to the rather heavy Quiet Riot I’d just consumed I struggled with the flavours which frankly, I just don’t like (yet). Going to have to steer clear of anything Citra-based for a while I think.
