Beer #356 - Camden Town Camden Pils

It's been a while since I'd had any new Camden Town beers - well over 12 months in fact - and now you're going to see two in a row. A trip to an Indian restaurant that allowed BYOB meant a quick dash to Waitrose and a bottle or two of Camden Pils, it seemed the most appropriate choice to go with a curry (although I also grabbed a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale). I'm far from a Pils expert - in fact that is something I need to address - but this is a good beer. This is light in body, crisp and refreshing and very drinkable. There is also a hearty dose of citrus hop flavours and a clean, bitter finish, which lends it the character of an American-style pale ale. Pretty good.

Beer #317 - König Pilsener

After my hop overload at the Lervig Sunday Session I fancied something a bit lighter on a recent work night out so I went for König Pilsener. Although this beer is quite widely available in the UK it was a new one to me and I was pleasantly surprised by how flavoursome it was. König Brauerei dates back to 1858 and is based in the west German city of Duisburg, not too far from the Dutch border. This pilsener looked like pretty much every other pilsener I’ve ever drunk; clear pale yellow, with a white head. The flavour was sweet and malty but balanced by a reasonable bitter finish. Not bad at all.

Beer #257 - Fourpure Pils

This was beer number one of five on my recent trip to the Bermondsey Beer Mile that you can read more about here. I’d had a slightly heavy night the evening before so, especially given the brilliant sunshine, I thought I’d start the afternoon at Fourpure with something light and refreshing and went for the Pils. Now I’m not usually a lager drinker as this blog will largely attest, but if more lagers were made like this or Sixpoint’s The Crisp I’d be far more likely to drink them. Not that there are big similarities between these two beers, they’re just well made, refreshing and most importantly, tasty. Fourpure’s Pils is wonderfully crisp, slightly carbonated and with a slight dryness that makes it effortlessly drinkable. Flavour-wise it’s malty, slightly sweet with some pepper and a bitter finish. Very good indeed and it set me up nicely for the day ahead. Unfortunately I didn't have the best day picture-wise and forgot to take this one until the glass was empty. It is a very nice glass though.

Beer 247 - Sixpoint The Crisp

Having previously tried the Sixpoint Bengali Tiger and, a couple of weeks ago, Sweet Action, I only needed one more beer to complete the Sixpoint ‘set’ of all three beers currently stocked by Wetherspoons. By a happy coincidence I found myself in The Fox on the Hill in south London last weekend and by happier coincidence, a sign outside the pub announced a special offer on Sixpoint cans which were available for just £1.99 a pop. The Crisp is a pilsener so I wasn’t expecting to enjoy this one anywhere near as much as its hoppy siblings. Now I’m far from being a fan of lager but having said that, I’ve never gone out of my way to try any particularly good lager either. This was unlike any other lager I can remember drinking. The pour was a hazy yellow with plenty of bubbles. Its light on the palate but there is some definite hints of grass and citrus fruits in here rendering it quite bitter (for a lager, at least). I enjoyed it, perfect for the summer when you want something light yet with a bit of flavour and it was refreshing and highly drinkable. Ok so it doesn’t compare favourably to the other two Sixpoint beers available in ‘Spoons, but then they’re both really great.
